Four thousand years ago, East Asians began pushing the boundaries of the known world aboard vessels with more than one hull. These capable craft allowed the adventurers to master the ocean and greatly expand their range, from East Africa and Indonesia to present-day Hawaii and beyond.

Leap forward to post-WWII America. A tight-knit group of do-it-yourself mavericks adopted this ancient technology, applied modern engineering and materials, and created a whole new movement that simultaneously shook up the sailing establishment and liberated them to experience the world on their terms.

Jim Brown, fellow multihull-mad sailors and Canadian cinematographer Scott Brown spent decades chronicling this era. The Beyond Mainstream Project is organizing and making accessible to the public this vast, museum- quality, multi-media trove that honors the ancients, celebrates recent history and in many ways offers lessons for our future.

Thank you for joining Friends of Jim Brown in our mission to organize, catalog, and share the amazing story of multihulls and one of the movement’s renowned pioneers.
I’ve known and admired Jim for a long time. This is why I and a couple of others in his circle have come together to pursue this project. If you are interested in supporting Beyond Mainstream or have questions, I’d be happy to talk. Send me an email and I’ll get right back to you.
And thanks again,
Andy Zimmerman
